Mystery Show Podcast: The Story Within the Story

June 8, 2015 by Gina Watters 3 Comments

Who was D.B. Cooper? Did Lee Harvey Oswald really act alone? What happened to Jimmy Hoffa? The world is full of mysteries. The big ones have certainly gotten their share of attention, but what about the little ones? Everyone has encountered one of these in their lives at one time, and they can really drive you nuts trying to figure them out.

I had one myself a few years ago when I came home to find five huge dragonfly-shaped Mylar balloons tied to my back porch with colorful ribbon. Everyone I knew denied putting them there, and I was inclined to believe them. It was a real head-scratcher, and one that tormented me for some time. I of course decided that the culprit was a sadistic clown killer marking me for later death. But that’s just me.

From ‘Serial’ to ‘Undisclosed’: Moving Further from the Truth

Undisclosed Podcast Logo

Unless you were living on the moon this past fall, you heard about Serial, the podcast tour de force that everyone from your mom to the guy who rotates your tires could not stop talking about. Serial fans by and large became very invested in the case against Adnan Syed for the murder of Hae Min Lee, and were left at the podcast’s conclusion with more questions than answers. Always more of an attempt to tell an engaging story than it was to give a detailed play-by-play, Serial made for riveting podcasting, but it was often frustratingly short on details. In its wake, a new podcast has emerged promising all the details you can handle (and probably a fair bit more). Undisclosed: The State v. Adnan Syed, hosted by attorney Rabia Chaudry, seeks to tell us all much more about the case, but with one very important caveat: she fully believes Syed is innocent.

The Mask You Live In: Failing Boys Fails Us All

The Mask You LIve In

The Mask You Live In, the new documentary from director Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the guiding force behind 2011’s Miss Representation, takes us from negative media portrayals of women to the other side of the gender spectrum to answer the question: “As a society, how are we failing our boys?” American boys, the film posits, are born into a culture that saddles them with a construct of masculinity that is both impossible to attain and destructive to pursue.

Through interviews with sociologists, activists, psychologists, neuroscientists and other experts, as well as personal stories from everyday boys and men, the filmmakers present a compelling argument that we are robbing boys and young men of the freedom to express their feelings, experience intimacy or participate in certain activities deemed not “manly” enough. The cost of this deprivation is high. The film explains how the demand for hyper-masculinity contributes to all manner of social ills including sexism, rape culture, transphobia, homophobia and violence. [Read more…]

The Fall: The Most Feminist Show on Television

March 4, 2015 by Gina Watters Leave a Comment

the-fall-

“A woman, I forget who, once asked a male friend why men felt threatened by women. He replied that they were afraid that women might laugh at them. When she asked a group of women why women felt threatened by men, they said, ‘We’re afraid they might kill us.’” – DSI Stella Gibson, The Fall

Often when I’m watching a crime show on television, I worry that Gloria Steinem might swoop into my living room and snatch away my Official Feminist Card™. I’ve always been intrigued by solving mysteries, and am often drawn to television series of that genre. But the downside to this particular fascination is that these shows are not particularly kind to women. Best-case scenario, the fairer sex is depicted as the semi-competent and often imperiled sidekick to the macho male detective. Worst-case scenario, she is an anonymous and sexualized victim, merely a prop to move the story along or to make the killer look more powerful. Even on shows with a female lead who wields some actual authority, such as Olivia Benson on Law & Order: Special Victim’s Unit, the underlying (and very intentional) titillating nature of the crimes adds an ick factor I just can’t get past.

House of Cards, the Netflix original series is back with season three this Friday, which means that if you haven’t seen them yet, you have just enough time to binge-watch seasons one and two. And here are five (spoiler-free) reasons why you should.
