Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Is Now On Netflix

Happy Kimmy Schmidt Day! All 13 episodes of the new Netflix original series are now available to stream. Gina and I are so excited about Tina Fey working in sitcoms again that we decided to devote an entire season of a podcast to it (our first episode drops Tuesday, March 10). The show stars Ellie Kemper, who plays a woman recently liberated from a cult. That sounds darker than I think it’s intended to be, but watch the trailer if you don’t believe me. Here’s why you should be excited to binge-watch this show this weekend.

I listen to an absurd number of podcasts. I love everything from highly polished scientific and political shows, all the way down to the over-caffeinated ramblings of comedy dudes furiously scrambling to out-riff each other. Many of my favorite podcasts have made me laugh so hard that strangers on the train have switched seats to avoid me. Others have left me so engrossed in the subject matter that I’ve actually walked past my own apartment building.

But there’s only one that caused me, on a gorgeous summer day, to stop dead in the middle of a crowded sidewalk and burst into tears.

A Forgotten History Retold: Karina Longworth’s “You Must Remember This”

Karina Longworth is overqualified to talk about movies. She holds three degrees in film (the first coming from our own School of the Art Institute of Chicago), co-founded the late, lamented Cinematical web site, and until recently served as chief critic for the venerable LA Weekly. Longworth left that position because, as she told rogerebert.com, she found being forced to have opinions on so many films she didn’t care about was less interesting than researching and asking deeper questions about films she did care about. Today, Longworth is a multiply-published author, a college teacher…and one of the best new podcasters in America with her show You Must Remember This.

This is a guest post by Gina Watters. Gina lives in Chicago where she writes stories and listens to podcasts (usually instead of whatever it is she’s actually supposed to be doing).

On February 9, 1999, high-school senior Hae Min Lee was found strangled to death in a wooded park in Baltimore County, Maryland. Her ex-boyfriend and classmate Adnan Syed was convicted of her murder and has spent the last 15 years in prison for the crime. Lee’s murder, and the subsequent investigation, is the subject of Serial, a new podcast from the producers of This American Life.
